Colapinto’s Madrid Progress Needs a Repeatability Test

A comparison of Colapinto and Gasly’s qualifying times shows signs of progress—and why Alpine needs more evidence before calling it a lasting change.

Franco Colapinto left Madrid with seventh place and a useful question for Alpine: can a strong weekend become a repeatable way of finding speed? The answer will matter beyond the six points he collected. A driver who can turn a difficult comparison with his team-mate into better execution gives a team more than an occasional result. He gives its engineers another route to understanding the car.

In its September 15 report, Formula 1 recorded Colapinto’s satisfaction with his Spanish Grand Prix performance after qualifying ninth. Motorsport’s reporting that day added a specific thread: he had studied Pierre Gasly’s qualifying performance at Monza and applied lessons in Madrid. Those accounts make this a good moment to examine the timing sheets, while resisting the temptation to declare a permanent change in Alpine’s internal order.

The useful comparison starts before the final grid

At Monza, Formula 1’s official qualifying classification shows Gasly ahead of Colapinto by 0.050 seconds in Q1, 0.323 in Q2 and 0.434 in Q3. Those gaps come from subtracting their best times within each segment. Gasly qualified first; Colapinto eighth. The final positions capture the outcome, but the growing gap identifies a more useful subject for the debrief: how each driver extracted performance as qualifying progressed.

There is a second way to read the same figures. Gasly improved from 1:22.612 in Q1 to 1:21.786 in Q3, a gain of 0.826 seconds. Colapinto went from 1:22.662 to 1:22.220, improving by 0.442. The difference in those gains is 0.384 seconds. That is an observation about recorded laps, not a measurement of how much one driver learned.

That distinction matters. Different tyres, run timing, traffic and changing conditions can influence successive best laps. The classification cannot separate those effects from driving or car preparation. Its value is diagnostic: it tells Alpine where to ask more precise questions. Publicly, it gives readers grounds to look beyond a simple first-versus-eighth verdict without pretending to possess the team’s telemetry.

Madrid changes the question

The following weekend supplied a different pattern. In Madrid’s official qualifying results, Colapinto was 0.283 seconds ahead of Gasly in Q1 and 0.715 ahead in Q2. Colapinto reached Q3 and qualified ninth; Gasly finished qualifying fourteenth. There is no valid Q3 comparison between them because Gasly did not participate in that segment.

It would be easy to subtract the Monza deficit from the Madrid advantage and announce a spectacular performance swing. That would produce a number with more drama than meaning. These were different circuits and different sessions. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the earlier pattern of Colapinto falling behind his team-mate through qualifying did not recur in the two segments they shared in Madrid.

That is encouraging evidence for a learning process, but it does not establish its cause. Motorsport’s account supplies the driver’s explanation; the classifications supply the results. Neither, alone or together, proves that studying Gasly was responsible for every tenth. A sound assessment keeps the explanation and the measurement connected without treating them as interchangeable.

A result also needs an execution account

Sunday adds a separate layer. Colapinto finished seventh, and Alpine’s own post-race statement credited him with six points. The team explained that Gasly’s starting position pushed it toward keeping him out in the hope of a later Safety Car. That is useful context for why the two race outcomes should not become a clean experiment in relative pace.

Our reading is that Alpine should assess three things separately: qualifying progression, the decisions made from the resulting grid position, and the final points. Combining them into one headline score can hide progress in one area or weakness in another. A strong qualifying performance creates options; it does not guarantee that race circumstances will reward them.

For Colapinto, the most valuable version of Madrid would therefore be a method he can describe and reproduce. Which preparation changes helped him deliver his lap? Which gains survive when the track offers a different balance of corners? Which parts depended on circumstances that will not return? Those are proposed evaluation questions, not claims about private conversations inside Alpine.

What would make the improvement convincing?

Watch the next several comparable qualifying sessions, rather than demand the same finishing position. A smaller deficit to Gasly can be positive evidence even if Alpine slips down the grid. Conversely, another points finish would say less about qualifying improvement if it mainly followed rivals’ problems. Team performance and driver development need separate scorecards.

Madrid has supplied a credible reason to pay attention, not enough evidence to promise a new hierarchy. Colapinto’s opportunity is to make his preparation useful across changing conditions. Alpine’s opportunity is to turn the comparison between its drivers into knowledge both can use. The important next step is repetition: another well-executed session would tell us more than another declaration of a breakthrough.
