Four hundred laps sounds like an answer. For Formula 1’s next tyres, it is better understood as the size of a notebook. Ferrari and Racing Bulls have finished two days of Pirelli development running at Imola, but the useful question is how much of next season’s operating range those laps actually explored.
TENS Magazine’s reading is that this test should be judged through a coverage map: which compounds met which cars, over which run lengths, and in which conditions. That approach gives the mileage meaning without pretending a September test has already settled how the 2027 racing will feel.
The mileage has a shape
GrandPrix247’s September 16 report records 400 laps and 1,963 kilometres across the two days. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc drove on the opening day; Antonio Giovinazzi, Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad took part on Wednesday. The prototype programme covered the C3, C4 and C5 compounds.
There is a revealing calculation inside the published totals. Wednesday’s contributions were 135 laps from Giovinazzi, 65 from Lawson and 73 from Lindblad. Together that is 273 laps, or 68.25 percent of the entire test. Subtracting those from 400 leaves 127 laps for Tuesday. Giovinazzi alone supplied 33.75 percent of the two-day lap count.
Those percentages measure running, not scientific importance. They cannot tell us which stint changed an engineer’s mind or which specification was discarded. Their value is editorial: they stop five participating drivers from being mistaken for five equally sized experiments. A useful next disclosure would connect that mileage to the questions each programme was designed to answer.
A shared compound is a comparison opportunity
The Wednesday programme offers a second way to organize the evidence. GrandPrix247 reports that Giovinazzi concentrated on C3, Lawson used C3 and C4, and Lindblad sampled C3 and C5. Read as a matrix, C3 is the common thread across all three drivers, while the other compounds add branches.
That creates an opportunity for comparison, rather than proof that a clean comparison was performed. The public report does not establish that every C3 run used an identical experimental specification, fuel load or setup. Nor does it publish the stint-by-stint record. We can identify where a useful comparison might sit; we cannot calculate its result.
This distinction matters because a development programme needs both breadth and repetition. Trying another option expands the menu. Repeating a known option helps establish whether a change in performance belongs to the tyre or to something else. The public mileage total merges those different jobs into one number. Readers should resist treating every additional lap as an equally independent vote for the finished product.
The missing result is a behaviour, not a headline time
The separate Grandprix report describes both shorter performance work and longer runs, and cautions that the differing programmes prevent a conventional ranking. For readers, the more consequential comparison would be between a tyre’s initial response and its behaviour as a stint develops.
Consider a hypothetical development choice. One prototype might look attractive over a brief run but become less consistent later; another might surrender some initial performance while offering a more predictable stint. Without the underlying results, either possibility remains open. TENS is not claiming that either occurred at Imola. The example explains why the same volume of testing can inform very different decisions.
Our proposed scorecard therefore has three questions: does the chosen direction work across the participating cars, does it remain useful over longer running, and does that judgement survive a different set of conditions? A fastest-lap list cannot answer those questions. Neither can a mileage milestone by itself.
What would make the next test persuasive?
There is historical primary-source context for that caution. In an interview published by Formula 1 on September 20, 2024, Pirelli’s Mario Isola described early testing for the 2026 tyres as work to connect simulations with track running. He also explained the limitations of using an adapted older car. That was a different development cycle, not evidence about this week’s hardware, but it illustrates why representativeness belongs beside mileage in any assessment.
Both specialist reports identify a wet-weather development session at Magny-Cours in mid-October as the next scheduled step. Its artificial watering system is intended to support that work. It should be understood as investigating another part of the problem, not automatically confirming the dry-running conclusions from Imola.
The standard for a convincing 2027 tyre story should now move beyond who drove and how far. Look for an explanation of what was learned, which comparisons support it, and where uncertainty remains. Pirelli does not need to release commercially sensitive detail for that distinction to matter.
Imola has supplied a substantial body of running. The public evidence supports that modest, meaningful conclusion. Whether it translates into tyres that improve next season’s racing remains a question for subsequent development and competition. The strongest reason to follow this programme is the gradual closing of those gaps, not the temptation to announce success before the product arrives.
