The FIA has officially inaugurated the 2026 Formula One World Championship, confirming that the new era of the sport will begin this weekend at Albert Park in Melbourne. The Australian Grand Prix, scheduled for March 6-8, returns to its traditional slot as the season opener, marking the first time since 2019 that the Victorian capital has hosted the first round of the championship.
This year’s event at Albert Park carries historical significance, as it introduces the most extensive set of regulation changes in the sport’s recent history. The FIA has implemented a major technical overhaul featuring lighter, smaller cars with active aerodynamics and power units that utilize 100% sustainable fuels. The new hybrid engines feature an equal 50/50 split between internal combustion and electrical power, a move designed to attract new manufacturers while maintaining the sport’s competitive DNA.
Stefano Domenicali, the CEO of Formula 1, emphasized the importance of this new chapter during the official launch proceedings. “2026 will be a new era for Formula 1 where we will witness a brand-new set of regulations for our sport,” Domenicali stated. He noted that the return to Melbourne as the opener was a strategic decision, facilitated by the timing of Ramadan, which necessitated moving the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia races to April. Following the opener in Australia, the paddock will travel to China and then Japan, creating a more logistically efficient calendar flow for the Asia-Pacific region.
The 2026 grid expands to 11 teams for the first time since 2016, with the highly anticipated debut of Cadillac. The American outfit, a partnership between General Motors and TWG Motorsports, has arrived in Melbourne with its new challenger, the MAC-26, named in honor of 1978 World Champion and board member Mario Andretti. The team is led by Principal Graeme Lowdon and features an experienced driver lineup of Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez. While Cadillac plans to introduce its own power unit in 2029, the team will compete using Ferrari customer engines for its inaugural seasons.
Another major shift on the grid sees Audi officially entering the sport as a factory team after completing its takeover of Sauber. The German manufacturer’s arrival further validates the FIA‘s new engine regulations, which were specifically crafted to entice global automotive giants.
The race weekend at Albert Park will be the first competitive test for the new “nimble car” concept. The 2026 regulations have reduced the maximum wheelbase by 200mm and the width by 100mm, aiming to make the cars more agile and conducive to overtaking. The removal of the MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit-Heat) and the introduction of a “Manual Override Mode”—which provides a burst of electrical power to aid overtaking—are expected to dramatically alter race strategies.
Local organizers expect record crowds at Albert Park, with the city of Melbourne extending its contract to host the race until 2035. The event officially begins with practice sessions on Friday, March 6, culminating in the Grand Prix on Sunday, March 8. As the teams prepare their garages, the FIA‘s declaration signals that the wait is over: the 2026 season is underway.
