Just months after the open-source OpenClaw framework began dominating developer mindshare, Anthropic has launched a direct, proprietary competitor: Claude Code Channels, paired with the new Dispatch mobile interface.
This move effectively draws a line in the sand between two distinct philosophies for the future of decentralized AI execution.
The Rise of the Agents
The explosion of interest in AI agents in early 2026 stems from a simple desire: moving AI from “reading and writing” to “doing.” Unlike a standard chatbot that waits for a prompt, an agent is designed to execute multi-step workflows.
OpenClaw, an open-source framework launched in late 2025, became an overnight sensation by allowing users to host their own agents. By plugging in an API (often Anthropic’s own Claude models), users could give an AI agent the ability to run computer commands, browse the web, and manage files—all triggered via existing messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram.
Anthropic’s Frictionless Pivot
Anthropic’s announcement of Claude Code Channels, paired with the Dispatch mobile app, aims directly at OpenClaw’s core use case. But instead of requiring users to manage their own servers, Docker containers, or technical environments, Anthropic has made the experience entire plug-and-play.
With Channels, any user with a professional Claude subscription can activate a persistent agent via a simple flag. This agent then becomes available over Telegram or Discord. The Dispatch app allows users to trigger complex automated tasks—such as updating a code repository or scraping a website—directly from their phones while on the go.
Furthermore, Anthropic is pairing this with a “computer use” preview, allowing the agent to remotely access and control a dedicated computer at the user’s home or office to execute clicks, keystrokes, and complex workflows.
The Strategic Fork: Power vs. Ease
For enterprise strategists and power users, this sets up a significant choice between deployment models.
The OpenClaw Route: This path offers total control, zero license fees, and infinite customization. It supports a massive array of models and over 20 messaging channels. For organizations with technical depth, this is the ultimate platform for building specialized “digital workers.”
The Anthropic Route: This path offers immediate deployment, native security, and zero hardware maintenance, but operates within a closed garden (limited to Telegram and Discord) and requires a paid subscription. It is the path of least resistance for users who need agentic power immediately.
Adding to the complexity, Nvidia just introduced NemoClaw at GTC 2026. This enterprise-grade stack offers a one-command optimization to add bank-level security sandboxing to OpenClaw deployments, stabilizing the open-source option for corporate use.
The battle lines are now clear. The future of AI isn’t just about which model will n yis smartest, but which agent is most accessible, secure, and capable of taking action.
