Hollywood actor and musician Jack Black made a high-profile appearance at the 2026 Formula 1 Aramco Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday, March 29, where he was granted the honorary duty of waving the checkered flag. Black attended the race at the Suzuka Circuit alongside several of his co-stars from the upcoming animated film “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” merging the worlds of international motorsport and entertainment in a major promotional event.
The actor, who voices the character Bowser in the Nintendo-based film franchise, was joined in the Formula 1 paddock by castmates Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy. The Hollywood trio, along with co-stars Keegan-Michael Key, Brie Larson, Charlie Day, and Benny Safdie, utilized the global platform of the Japanese Grand Prix to promote their new movie just days after its official premiere in Japan. Given that Japan is the birthplace of the Mario franchise and its parent company, Nintendo, the cast’s presence at one of the country’s largest international sporting events served as a strategic promotional stop ahead of the film’s worldwide theatrical release in early April 2026.

Before the race began, the ensemble cast was highly visible on the starting grid, participating in the traditional pre-race grid walk. The actors mingled with fans, team personnel, and media representatives amidst the chaotic buildup to the Grand Prix. During their time in the paddock, the group made a notable visit to the Scuderia Ferrari garage. There, they met and posed for photographs with seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who is currently driving for the Italian outfit. The actors were also accompanied by family members; Pratt attended the race with his eldest son, Jack, while Taylor-Joy was joined by her husband, Malcolm McRae.
As the Grand Prix reached its conclusion, race organizers positioned Black at the finish line above the pit wall. The actor was handed the checkered flag, a ceremonial role frequently given to celebrity guests at Formula 1 events. Black waved the flag to signal the end of the race as the winning car crossed the finish line, officially concluding the weekend’s track action.
The driver who took the checkered flag from Black was 19-year-old Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli. Antonelli’s victory at Suzuka marked a historic moment for Formula 1, as the young Italian driver claimed his second consecutive win of the 2026 season. In doing so, Antonelli became the youngest driver in the history of the sport to lead the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship. Antonelli capitalized on a well-timed Safety Car period—brought out following a heavy crash by Haas driver Oliver Bearman—to secure a commanding 13-second victory over the rest of the field.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri crossed the line in second place, securing his team’s first podium finish of the 2026 campaign after a challenging start to the year. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc rounded out the podium in third place, giving the “Super Mario” cast a reason to celebrate following their pre-race visit to the Ferrari garage. Mercedes driver George Russell finished in fourth place, while McLaren’s Lando Norris and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton engaged in a late-race battle, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. Defending World Champion Max Verstappen, driving for Red Bull Racing, finished in eighth place after struggling to find pace throughout the weekend.
The intersection of Formula 1 and Hollywood has become increasingly common under the sport’s current ownership, Liberty Media, which has actively encouraged celebrity integration to broaden the sport’s global audience. The presence of the “Super Mario Galaxy Movie” cast at Suzuka highlights this ongoing trend, providing mutual visibility for both the racing series and the upcoming blockbuster. The Japanese Grand Prix consistently draws massive crowds, and the addition of international film stars added to the spectacle of the weekend.
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” serves as the direct sequel to the massive box office success of the previous animated adaptation. The film features Pratt returning to voice the titular plumber, Mario, Taylor-Joy reprising her role as Princess Peach, and Black returning as the primary antagonist, Bowser. New additions to the voice cast include Brie Larson as Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. Following their promotional duties at the Suzuka Circuit, the cast is expected to continue their global press tour as the film prepares to hit theaters in the United States on April 1, 2026.
