As the 2026 Formula 1 season resumes following an extended break, Mercedes-AMG F1 holds a commanding position at the top of the Constructors’ Championship standings. Heading into the Miami Grand Prix, the Brackley-based team has accumulated 135 points, establishing a 45-point advantage over second-placed Ferrari, which currently holds 90 points. The strong start for Mercedes-AMG F1 comes after securing victories in the opening three rounds of the season, setting a clear benchmark under the new 2026 technical regulations.
The success of Mercedes-AMG F1 in the early stages of the championship has been driven by the performances of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. The team has achieved a sweep of race wins across the Australian Grand Prix, the Chinese Grand Prix, and the Japanese Grand Prix. Kimi Antonelli currently leads the Drivers’ Championship, having secured consecutive victories in China and Japan. The 19-year-old Italian driver holds a points advantage over his teammate George Russell, reflecting the early dominance of the Mercedes W17 car.
The upcoming race at the Miami International Autodrome marks the return of Formula 1 after a five-week hiatus. This unscheduled gap in the calendar was the result of the cancellation of the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, which were originally scheduled for April but were removed from the schedule due to safety concerns related to regional conflicts. Consequently, the Miami Grand Prix serves as the fourth round of the season and the first on-track action since the Japanese Grand Prix concluded on March 29.
Behind the leading duo of Mercedes-AMG F1 and Ferrari, McLaren occupies third place in the Constructors’ Championship with 46 points. The Woking-based team saw an upturn in performance in Japan, where Oscar Piastri secured a podium finish. Further down the standings, the midfield battle remains closely contested. Haas currently sits in fourth place with 18 points, followed closely by Alpine with 16 points. Defending champions Red Bull Racing have experienced a challenging start to the 2026 campaign with their RB22 chassis, matching Alpine with 16 points and sitting in sixth place in the team standings.
The extended break has provided teams with a significant development window to address early-season performance deficits. The Miami Grand Prix is expected to feature the introduction of major upgrade packages across the grid. Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has stated that the resumption of racing in Florida will effectively serve as another start to the season. Ferrari, fielding the driver pairing of Charles Leclerc and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, has implemented a development plan aimed at improving the power unit output and overall performance of the SF-26 to challenge the leading pace of Mercedes-AMG F1.
The 2026 season introduced overhauled technical regulations, particularly concerning hybrid energy management. Mercedes-AMG F1 has demonstrated superior adaptation to these new rules. Reports indicate that the team has utilized a specific compression ratio configuration that provides a measurable lap time advantage. However, this specific technical allowance is set to expire ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix on June 1. Additionally, the aerodynamic testing restrictions currently grant Ferrari an 85 percent wind tunnel allocation compared to the 75 percent allocation permitted for Mercedes-AMG F1, a factor that may influence the development race as the 24-race season progresses.
The Miami Grand Prix weekend will also feature the second Sprint event of the 2026 season. The format includes a single practice session on Friday, followed by Sprint Qualifying. The Sprint race will take place on Saturday, preceding the standard qualifying session for the main Grand Prix on Sunday. The inclusion of the Sprint format limits the amount of practice time available for teams to evaluate their new aerodynamic and mechanical upgrades, placing a premium on pre-race simulation work.
As the paddock convenes in Florida, the primary focus remains on whether the updates brought by Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull Racing will be sufficient to reduce the performance gap to Mercedes-AMG F1. With 19 rounds still remaining in the 2026 championship, the development trajectory established at the Miami International Autodrome will provide critical indicators for the competitive balance of the remainder of the Formula 1 season. Lando Norris will also be returning to the circuit where he secured his maiden Grand Prix victory, adding another focal point to the weekend as McLaren seeks to consolidate its position in the standings.
