Kimi Antonelli Claims Third Straight Miami GP Victory, Extends Mercedes’ Championship Lead

By The TENS Magazine Editorial Staff

Kimi Antonelli secured a victory at the 2026 Miami Grand Prix, driving for Mercedes to claim his third consecutive win of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The 19-year-old Italian driver held off reigning world champion Lando Norris of McLaren, crossing the finish line 3.264 seconds ahead of the British driver at the Miami International Autodrome. The victory bolsters Antonelli’s position at the top of the Drivers’ Championship, extending his advantage over his closest rivals.

With this result, Antonelli increased his championship lead to 20 points over his Mercedes teammate George Russell, who concluded the race in fourth place. According to the updated standings, Antonelli currently holds 100 points, followed by Russell with 80 points. Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc sits in third place with 63 points, while Lando Norris occupies fourth with 51 points. The performance by both Antonelli and Russell further solidifies Mercedes‘ position at the top of the Constructors’ Championship.

The race began with a contested opening lap. Starting from pole position, Antonelli faced immediate pressure heading into Turn 1. He lost the initial lead to Charles Leclerc and was forced to take evasive action to avoid a collision with Max Verstappen, who spun his Red Bull car during the early exchanges. Despite the start, Antonelli maintained his track position and remained within striking distance of the race leaders.

A key moment of the Miami Grand Prix occurred during the pit stop phase. Mercedes executed an undercut strategy, bringing Antonelli into the pits for a tire change from the medium to the hard compound one lap earlier than McLaren did for Lando Norris. This tactical decision allowed Antonelli to regain track position and establish an advantage. For the remainder of the 57-lap race around the Hard Rock Stadium, Antonelli managed his pace, tire degradation, and reported gearbox concerns to keep Norris behind him.

Oscar Piastri delivered a consistent performance to finish third, securing a double podium for McLaren. George Russell claimed fourth place after overtaking a struggling Charles Leclerc in the closing stages of the race. Max Verstappen executed a recovery drive following his first-lap spin, ultimately passing Leclerc at the finish line to secure fifth place for Red Bull.

Further down the order, Franco Colapinto earned an eighth-place finish for Alpine. The Williams team recorded a double-points finish, with Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon crossing the line in ninth and tenth places, respectively.

The race was interrupted on lap six when the safety car was deployed following a multi-car incident. Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar collided with the wall, which subsequently led to a crash involving Pierre Gasly of Alpine and Liam Lawson of the Racing Bulls. The track was cleared, and racing resumed without further major interruptions.

Following the race, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff commended Antonelli’s driving, describing the Miami Grand Prix as the teenager’s best race to date. Wolff highlighted Antonelli’s error-free performance and compared his composure to his earlier days in karting and Formula 4.

Antonelli addressed the media after the podium ceremony, acknowledging the effectiveness of the team’s strategy. He stated that the undercut was pivotal to the victory and emphasized that the team managed to secure the win despite the challenging circumstances. Regarding his championship lead, Antonelli noted that the season is still in its early stages and credited his team and family for their ongoing support.

Lando Norris expressed mixed feelings about his second-place finish. While acknowledging the points haul and the step forward for McLaren, Norris stated that missing out on the victory was disappointing given the competitive pace of his car throughout the weekend.

Antonelli’s triumph at the Miami Grand Prix marks a milestone in Formula 1 history. At 19 years old, he became the first driver to convert his first three career pole positions into his first three race victories, following his previous successes at the Chinese Grand Prix and the Japanese Grand Prix.

Event organizers had adjusted the schedule prior to the race, bringing the start time forward by three hours due to forecasts predicting severe thunderstorms and lightning in the Miami area. Ultimately, the race was completed under dry conditions without any weather-related disruptions. The Formula 1 paddock will now prepare for the next round of the championship, scheduled to take place at the Canadian Grand Prix.
