MIAMI, Fla. – The sultry, salt-kissed air of South Beach met pure high-fashion escapism as Normal Culture took over the runway at Miami Swim Week® The Shows. Hosted at the pool-side oasis of the Mondrian Hotel in May 2026, the evening was more than a seasonal debut—it was a triumphant homecoming. This year marked the 10-year anniversary of Normal Culture, a label founded by reality TV icon, model, and designer Jelaminah “Jela” Lanier. For this milestone resort season, the Baddies star delivered her most elevated, cinematic vision yet: “Retro Riviera.”

Jet-Set Nostalgia on the Runway

For Jela, “Retro Riviera” is a love letter to the art of the getaway. “My inspiration this year… was definitely inspired by my love of travel and the soft life and just retro vibes all the way through and through,” she shared, reflecting on the collection’s origin.

The pieces transported the front row straight to the European coast, heavily drawing from Jela’s personal travels through Greece, Milan, and the Amalfi Coast. The visual storytelling was rich with architectural and natural cues. “I really tapped into my love for Greece, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Amalfi Coast—and just everything that that encompasses,” Jela explained. “All of the beautiful cobalt blue artwork and the really bright pinks and greens that you see, whether it’s like a floral design or just architecturally speaking.”

This high-octane palette materialized in a custom-designed Mediterranean print that felt instantly iconic. To anchor the vintage glamour, Jela framed the vibrant pinks, striking greens, and deep cobalt blues with sharp, contrasting yellow and crisp white outlines. The tailoring gave a chic, graphic nod to 1960s and 70s resort luxury, while modern cutouts, plunging asymmetric lines, and high-cut silhouettes maintained the unapologetic edge that Normal Culture is known for.

A New Era of Inclusive Luxury

While the aesthetic leaned into the exclusive “soft life” of European yacht culture, the philosophy behind the collection remained fiercely inclusive. Jela designed “Retro Riviera” to break the traditional, rigid boundaries of swim fashion, intentionally expanding the line to be accessible for families with children.

To bring this vision of modern family luxury full circle, the runway featured male models debuting sleek, coordinated men’s swimwear. The show truly redefined the family aesthetic when Jela’s fellow Zeus Network star and close friend Scotlynd Ryan confidently strutted down the runway holding her newborn child—a powerful, viral moment that celebrated motherhood and inclusivity at the highest level of fashion.

Crafting the Culture

What cements Normal Culture’s status as a powerhouse is Jela’s hands-on journey. Lacking formal fashion schooling, she famously taught herself how to sew in 2019 using scrap fabrics. Today, that self-taught craftsmanship allows her to design with a meticulous eye for how fabric moves and fits diverse body types, particularly prioritizing representation for tall and Black models on the global stage.

Accompanied by a star-studded front row including Baddies co-star Ahna Mac, the Mondrian Hotel show was a masterclass in community, culture, and high-end design. With “Retro Riviera,” Jela Lanier proved that a decade into her career, Normal Culture isn’t just participating in the fashion conversation—it’s rewriting the script.
